Ely - Cambridgeshire
Ely is a beautiful cathedral city, the 2nd smallest in the UK. It is compact enough that you can walk around it easily but with enough to do to stay for the day and enjoy it. Home to Oliver Cromwell in 1630s and 1640s where he acted as the local tax collector! If you love history, you’ll love Ely. I would imagine it would be a good place to live if you wanted something similar to Cambridge but on a smaller scale and less tourists!
You cannot visit Ely and not take a look around the magnificent cathedral. It was breathtaking and the architecture and ceiling were stunning.
Make a visit to this cafe and if you go inside to the lower area for tea or a meal, you’ll be impressed by the wonderful vaulted ceiling. It certainly WOW’d me as I was not expecting it!
The tourist office.
The wooden doors leading into the cathedral was absolutely stunning.
Everywhere you look is a door or gate leading to somewhere interesting!
How amazing is the wrought iron design on this door!
Such an impressive cathedral and visible from most points around the city.
I couldn’t resist this shot, these two beauties were watching me taking photos.
I’m obsessed with these doors!
Another gate or door leading to somewhere interesting…..
It’s a very well preserved city and there was still restoration work going on.
